Meeting called to order at

Minutes: Keith
made a motion to accept the minutes of
January 30, 2008
. Sue seconded the motion.
This meeting was called to address recreation programs.
Public Input:
Projects that have been going include dugouts, addition to
the shed at the recreation field, repairs to the walkway at
Elfin
Lake
. Repair to the tennis and
basketball courts needs to be addressed.
The summer program run at
Clarendon
Elementary School
begins July 7. In the past it has
run for three weeks, Monday through Thursday by Cheryl Maniery.
This would leave two weeks before this program and three weeks after the
Clarendon program. (June 23 and 30;
and July 28, August 4 and August 11).
Lisa read the letter written by Wendy Savery regarding
combining a summer recreation program and Wallingford Daycare.
Keeping this in mind, if
Wallingford
runs a summer recreation program, it would need to run straight through the
day. Sue indicated that one of the
reasons she wanted to keep a program running at the recreation field is to
maintain the recreation area.
Different program that were discussed included soccer,
tennis, swimming. Rodney asked what
are the numbers that we would need to pay for the program.
This would require another meeting to focus on specific
programs and talk to people who might be interested in teaching programs.
If we ran this program, the town’s insurance would cover these programs
at the school, the recreation fields, and the lake.
Charlie Angel asked about having medical releases and
registration for kids being signed up for specific times.
Joan asked about having a schedule of activities for kids
for the day would be helpful to let people know what types of activities will
occur on given days and times. She
indicated that the children could not be given too much freedom to pick their
own activities.
Bill indicated that the committee will need to determine
who will run which programs, included the recreation programs and
Elfin
Lake
. Bill indicated that in the past,
interns were brought from
Springfield
college to run these programs.
Bill asked what would happen to the money that has been
raised through the recreation program in previous years.
That money should be coming back into the recreation program.
Lisa made a motion that the being discussed money be put
into the recreation account in the town. Tom
seconded the motion. Motion passed
unanimously.
Lisa indicated that a port-o-potty would need to be put on
the field. This should go on
the north field. We will need to
look the cost to pump more than one time per week.
Tom made a motion to have a port-o-potty on the field from May first to
Labor Day. Motion passed
unanimously.
Rodney wanted to clarify that the recreation committee was
going to hire lifeguards for
Elfin
Lake
. That is true.
The lifeguard job descriptions need to be clearly defined.
The place needs to be much cleaner. We
need to keep the numbers of people that are at the lake.
Lifeguard shirts, flag, and chair will need to be purchased.
Joyce will take care of this. Kim
proposed that lifeguards not be allowed to use cell phones.
Keith suggested that we put together a list of what we would like to see
the lifeguards do and what the responsibilities are.
The committee discussed whether people can go to the lake
before it is officially opened.
Tom Phillips asked if Mill River United Soccer would be
willing to run their K-2 program at the
Wallingford
field.
Tom asked about having softball tournaments and/or
volleyball tournaments as a fundraiser for the recreation committee.
Tom indicated that the town will not take care of the
sidewalk at the lake. We will need
to get someone who can take care of the work that needs to be completed at the
lake.
Next meeting will be next
Wednesday, April 26, 2008
