Wallingford Conservation Commission Minutes*

*These are unofficial Minutes subject to the approval at the next regular meeting.

 September 28, 2009

Attendees:  Anne Miller, Ralph Nimtz, Carol Macleod, Tim Chila, and Kim Blodgett

(1)    Meeting called to order 7:23 p.m.

(2)    Approval of minutes.

(3)    The Pit:  The Pit subcommittee met for the second time tonight. First meeting was on site on September 9, 2009.  The group investigated excavating a 12 foot square area to allow biking access to the bridge.  In two weeks sub-committee members will push back the rocks along the road and excavate some of the gravel to enlarge the area along the road for parking.  They have brainstormed lists of things to do:  grant writing, field trips to other sites, and hosting a geologist to investigate an interesting geologic structure in the pit. The Conservation Commission intends to begin marking/building trails next spring. Carol will contact Michael Smith to try to organize a meeting between Michael and some members of the WCC at Pine Hill Park on October 10th at 10:00 to look at trail layout.  Carol will email the group to confirm.  She will also call Doug Reeves who works for the USFS to see if he is interested in helping with the trail construction/marking at the pit. Ralph will email group if he intends to take a walk in “Stone bog” in the next couple of weeks.  Next spring we should consider a pit appreciation day with a tour of the bog, trees, birds, bar-b-que, etc.

(4)    Town Plan:  Tim is waiting to hear from the planning commission regarding their interest in the WCC hosting a meeting with Jens Hilke.

(5)    Walking Brochure:  Carol brought walking brochures to the meeting for distribution.  Tim will deliver to the Stone Shop, Wallingford Day, churches and other committee meetings; Ralph:  Wallingford Country Store;  Kim:  Hearth and Cricket and Bushey’s; Anne:  Antique shops and White Rocks Inn. Tim will ask David about more paper so we can make more copies.

(6)    Fall Presentations:

·                    October 15th:  Composting, Town Hall 7:00pm

·                    October 29th:  Button Up, Town Hall 7:00pm

How can we improve on attendance?  Only WCC members showed up at the Efficiency Vermont presentation, Tim suggested sending our flyers home with the kids at the elementary school. Tim will design a composting poster for distribution and call the Principal for permission. We will offer CFL light bulbs at both meetings, if attendees brings a regular light bulb to trade. Tim and Shannon will attend the Button Up workshop this Wednesday the 30th 6:30 to 8:00 pm to prepare for the October meeting.

(7)    Strategic Plan: We’ll combine with a social gathering.

(8)    Kiosk:  Kim needs to send David photos of the kiosk (oops—sorry David).  Garden Time sells picnic tables for $200.00.  Carol will look into whether they would consider donating one if we put their name on it.

(9)    Energy Summit :  Tim attended the energy summit in Rutland.  Attendees included Efficiency Vermont, BROC, Neighborworks, CVPS, contractors, and other people associated with energy issues to formulate an energy plan for Rutland County. The group brainstormed ideas and agreed to work towards trying to make 10% of the buildings 10% more efficient by 2010 (10/10/10 plan).  They plan to meet again in a couple of weeks. Tim is on the next Selectboard meeting agenda to propose that he be named Energy Chair so he can establish an energy committee.

(10)Content of November Newsletter:  Button Up announcement made it into the  October issue but not the composting announcement.  In the next newsletter, we will include a “Message From Your Conservation Commission” Kim will use the Efficiency Vermont literature to compile a list of “Ten Things You Can Do To Make Your Home More Energy Smart”.

(11)Meeting Adjourned 8:25 p.m.

(12)Next Meeting: October 26, 2009.
