Wallingford Recreation Committee
Minutes*

May 12, 2009

*These are unofficial until approved at the next meeting

Attendance:  Keith Shelvey, Tony Petrossi, Jim Osmer, Lisa Marchinkoski, and Tom Phillips

Meeting called to order at 6:30 .

Minutes:  Tony made a motion to approve the minutes of the 4/22/09 meeting.  Jim seconded the motion.  Motion passed unanimously.

New Members: Sue Duskiewicz has resigned and there is now a vacancy on the recreation committee.

Summer Rec Program:  Three people have been hired.  To date there are approximately 29 kids signed up.

Elfin Lake Employees:  The selectboard hired back Evan and Lynn.  We are waiting for other applications that were going to be completed.  Keith has been told that the selectboard would like us to make recommendations regarding who to hire.  We have not seen any of the applications.  There have been 4-5 applications for the summer program positions.

Discussed the lifeguard salaries and staying within budget.  With a draft schedule that Keith shared at the proposed pay rates, and each employee working 28 hours per week, the salary would not be over budget.  We would like to put an ad in the newspaper for the lifeguard positions.

The fire department is coming to the lake on June 6 to burn the pile of brush.  There is dirt and posts and cement blocks that have been dumped by the entrance gate to the lake.  We need to go to the lake and have a clean up day.

Tennis and Basketball courts:  Wilk Sealing said the job is too small for them.  We need to be sure that whomever is doing the job, that it is sealed with the proper material.  At this point, we are unsure where we will be able to obtain a second quote.

Baseball fields:  We have looked into purchasing a load of clay.  We will need to find trucking.

The barrel that is buried in near the playground needs to be dug out and filled in.  We need to get the town to do this.

Memorial Day Parade:  The MRUHS band is all set.  Fire department is all set and they were talking to the rescue squad.  Julie is contacting the police for traffic control.  Girls on the Run and baseball will be in it.  The people that we have talked to with antique cars do not want to be in the parade.  We are looking for people with any antique cars, trucks, tractors to participate in the parade.  We need to talk to Frank Bruce to see if he wants any of his animals in it.  Regarding the parade route, Joyce and Julie are working on this.

Complaints by Lynn Wade:  Regarding the lifeguard chair, it is buried into the ground.  If they need a step, we can build a step.  Regarding bathrooms being left open for those coming down early, no one comes to the lake before it is open. The summer rec employees had keys to the building if needed, but were not at the lake before it was open.  There has never been anything brought to the recreation meeting regarding any of these complaints.

Next meeting:  Wednesday May 20, 2009 at 5:00 at Elfin Lake to do a walk through of work needed.

Meeting adjourned at 7:40 .
