Wallingford
Energy Committee Minutes*
*These are
unofficial Minutes subject to the approval at the next regular meeting.
January 4, 2011
Present: Tim Chila, Jay White, Joyce Barbieri, Ralph Nimtz,
and Ken Welch
Guests: Bob Williams (and his wife Doreen), Manager of
Wallingford’s True Temper Factory
Jay moved that we accept the minutes of the December meeting
as written. Ken seconded the motion. It was so voted.
Bob Williams gave us a very informative and interesting
overview of the heating system that is used at their plant in town. They utilize
the defective ash lumber – after it has been converted into chips - from the
processing of wooden handles, to fuel the 1942 boiler. The extra chips are sold.
The plant uses approximately 50% of what they convert in the winter months and
20% in the summer months. Their plant has had an energy audit of the lighting in
1990 and will have another later this month. This system heats the entire plant
and 5 dry kilns. The committee will meet Bob Saturday January 8 at 10 a.m. for a
tour of the site.
Ken updated the members present about the VECAN lighting grant
that he is completing. He plans to replace 15 ballasts and bulbs in the lighting
on the first floor of the town hall building. Jay will look into the cost of
replacing the actual fixtures, and it was suggested we look into adding motion
sensors, an on-demand hot water heater, and a thermostat programming system. The
deadline is January 31st.
Jared Moats will be doing the town hall energy audit.
Ralph updated us on the status of the street lighting in town.
He and Alicia Sharp (Fire District committee member) are spearheading this
project and Ralph will keep us in the loop as to the progress. They will be
doing an audit of the present lighting in town.
Ken announced that Efficiency Vermont will not be rebating $50
per household (we expected $200) for the houses in town that went on to have an
outside energy audit. Part of the criteria was that the audit had to be tested
out by December 31st and none of ours were.
Joyce asked (on behalf of the Selectboard) that the members of
the Energy Committee (along with our Building committee members) looks at the
energy audit for the town garage completed by Steve Spatz and give their
recommendations as to the cost effectiveness of completely replacing the garage
vs. renovating it. They will also take into consideration the various defects
written up by our insurance provider. The members will tour the building
Saturday January 8th and come back with some ideas at our February
meeting.
Tim reviewed the solar portion of the town plan written up by
Jay and asked that we each had a sketch of our various sections written up for
review at the next meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 7:50. Jay made the motion and Ralph
seconded it. It was so voted.
