Otter Creek restoration
(Shannon Pytlik):
Shannon
works for the State of
Vermont River Management Program
. They inventory and assess the
status of streams and rivers and participate in grants program through the Clean
and Clear initiative. The goal of
the stream/river assessments is to identify and fund restoration projects.
Shannon
’s organization has done the phase 1 assessment (aerial assessment) of the
Otter Creek. In addition, NRCD
(Nancy Mcguire) conducted an assessment of the riparian buffers in 2005 and
developed a report.
Shannon
will provide the WCC the NRCD assessment and the maps from their phase 1
assessment. The commission will
conduct a site visit and will let
Shannon
know when we are planning to go so she can go with us.
If we identify sites for planting we can possibly coordinate with the YCC
so they can help. In addition, Ralph
will look into the area behind the Fire Station for clean-up and restoration.
(3)
The Pit:
The Act 250 permit was denied. The
applicants intend to appeal once they hear from the structural engineer
regarding the bridge. The Commission will meet on Monday, May 16th at
6:00 p.m.
at the entrance to
Waldo Lane
to walk the pit, the Otter Creek, and to
GPS the trails and riparian area.
(4)
Presentations:
Jens Hilke will present a program on Conservation Planning on Wednesday
May 23rd and Mary Beth Adler and Steve Pytlik will present a program
on the Wildlife Habitat Improvement Program (WHIP) and invasive plant control on
the 31st, both at
7:00 p.m.
Debbie has already submitted a press release to Julie.
She will also send flyers to the clerks in surrounding towns inviting
planning/conservation commission members. Tim
is sending press releases to area newspapers and town newsletters.
The group is considering an invasive species walk for families
sometime in the summer and we intend to invite Katy Gordon to do a Climate
change presentation this fall. Debbie
will contact her and set up a date in September or October.
(5)
Green Up Day:
Rob Barker is showing up at our table at
10:00 a.m.
to take a group to mulch newly planted trees in town.
Debbie will put together a couple of flyers and put them up at the
library, town hall, etc. Tim will
bring the gloves, and Kim will make cookies. Bill and Debbie will open the
Rotary
Building
, set up the table, and start the coffee. Carol
will contribute 1.5 gallons of cider and cups. Debbie, Kim and Peter will man
the table. Debbie will check with
Julie about the maps.

Walking
Tours
Brochure: Tim is still working on his
hard drive.
(7)
Hartford
CC Newsletter: The
format used in
Hartford
would cost $2.00/newsletter to print. The
group decided that we could not afford to produce a large, color newsletter
similar to the one done by the Hartford Conservation Commission.
We decided to make smaller brochures and print them out on our home
computers.
(8)
Orton Build out:
Dave went to the first meeting but since then has not heard back from the
organizers. They have apparently not
had another meeting. Dave will
represent the WCC on the committee.
(9)
Wetland Bills:
Kim Greenwood invited someone from the WCC to attend a meeting to hammer
out new wetlands legislation. Tim
asked her to keep us in the loop.
