Wallingford Recreation Committee
Minutes*

April 14, 2010

Attendance:  Keith Shelvey, Lisa Marchinkoski, Tom Phillips, Tony Petrossi, Jim Osmer

Guests: Josh Gilman

Meeting called to order at 6:30.  

Reappointments:  Lisa made a motion for Keith as chair.  Tom seconded.  Motion passed unanimously.  Keith made a motion that Tony be vice chair.  Tom seconded.  Motion passed unanimously.  Keith made a motion for Lisa as secretary.  Tom seconded.  Motion passed unanimously.

Lifeguards:  The committee reviewed applications that have been received.  Josh made a recommendation that the proposed director position be eliminated at the lake and indicated that the town employees, including Julie, Joyce, and Sandy would oversee the lake including the money and all director responsibilities as outlined in the Recreation Committee description of Elfin Lake Director.  The responsibilities of the proposed lake director were reviewed.  Handling of the money, particularly on weekends, was discussed.  Money should be dropped at the town hall each day, including the weekends, with the exception of the money needed for opening the next day.  After discussion, the Committee agreed and voted to make the recommendation to the have the proposed Lake Director duties handled by the Town Clerk’s office.

Concession could be delivered to the lake each week.  

Lisa made a motion to recommend Jesse Doiron and Andy Imhof for hire as lifeguards at Elfin Lake for the 2010 summer season.  Tony seconded the motion.  Motion passed unanimously.   

We would like to contact Mill River and have them repost that we are looking for lifeguards at Elfin Lake.

Elfin Lake Work: to The power needs to be turned on at the lake ASAP for projects to begin.  Bill Lohsen will need to be contacted to turn on the water at the lake.  Materials for the retaining wall have been purchased.  The recreation development committee will be meeting on 4/26 and would like to coordinate with the recreation committee the work to be done at the lake. 

Tony shared grills that he can make which would cost $75 in material for each grill.  Lisa made a motion to put three grills at the lake and one at the recreation field for a cost of $300.  An Elfin Lake pass will be given to Tony Petrossi for making the grills and all his other work at the Lake and a pass will be given to Ray Petrossi for the use of his tools. 

Tony shared that there are teenagers at his church who are willing to do work for a donation. Tony made a motion to allow IBC Youth Group to perform volunteer work for the Recreation Committee.  Motion passed unanimously.  Keith made a motion to make a donation of $180 to the IBC Youth Group.  Jim seconded the motion.  Motion passed unanimously. 

We will need 200 pounds of grass seed and six bales of straw for seeding at the lake.  Keith and Tom will look into costs for this. 

The committee will meet at Elfin Lake at 5:00 on Wednesday April 21 to begin work. 

Doors at Elfin Lake.  Quotes have been received from r.k. Miles and Drywall Center for new doors for the building at the lake.  The committee would like to know if insurance will cover this cost. 

The Recreation Committee recommends that Kim Maniery, Dominic Maniery, and Steve Culbertson be re-hired for the Summer Recreation Program.  Tom made a motion to hire Stephanie Pellitier for the summer counselor position based on her experience with children and the fact that she will be willing to work full time.  Jim seconded the motion.  Motion passed unanimously.  Tom made a motion that Stephanie Gould be hired as an alternate or a part time position if needed based on numbers.  Jim seconded the motion.  Motion passed unanimously.
