The Gilbert Hart
Library
Spring
has meant the blossoming of the poetry tree outside, while inside patrons visit
the computer stations, use the wireless connection to work on their laptops,
catch up on news in the Rutland Herald, and check out new books and magazines to
take home. Each month more new library cards are being issued, and we also
lend from our collection to other libraries throughout the state using
interlibrary loan. Due to the increased interest in the latest and
greatest books and audios, an orange circle dot has been placed on new
acquisitions and the lending time shortened from four to two weeks. This
arrangement means more people can enjoy new materials sooner.
Many
thanks to all the wonderful people that keep the library open Wednesday evenings
and Saturday mornings. Their hard work and dedication means a lot. Lots of
exciting opportunities are on the horizon for children this summer with the One
World, Many Stories reading program meeting for six weeks to encourage readers
to visit other places through books, projects, and song. Look for
posters and more info later this month. Until then, keep on reading!

By the Friends of Gilbert Hart Library
The calendar says we are close to the month of
May, but it sure doesn’t feel like it, does it? So, let’s find things to
take our minds off the weather, if we can.
May 4th
is the First Wednesday, and so you have two choices for Vermont
Humanities Lectures: in Rutland
the program is “Going to War in Shakespeare: Olivier, Branagh and Henry V.”
Using clips from the films of Henry V with Lawrence Olivier and Kenneth
Branagh, Dartmouth Professor Peter Saccio explores the way this play speaks to
our times.
Rutland
Library, 7:00 p.m.
Your other choice
is in
Manchester
where the topic is “Barbie after 50.” Maintaining that Barbie’s longevity
is due in part to her improbable body, Professor Carol Ockman considers Barbie
as both a cultural phenomenon and in relation to the nude in Western art. First
Congregational Church 7:00 p.m. Both programs are free.
The Friends’
project for May is the annual Plant Sale, which will be held on May 14th
from 9 a.m. – Noon. We welcome any offering of plants or seedlings to this
sale – all moneys go to the Library. Perhaps the weather will cooperate with
our efforts and we hope to have vegetable, herb and flower seedlings, as well as
bulbs and shrubs. This is usually a good sale, but I am reminded of a day within
the last decade when we had snow on the ground for selling plants! Place: front
of Library.
Whist parties
continue in the month of May for Friday the 13th and the 27th,
always at 7:00. Carol Pratt (446-2843) is in charge.
Did you know?
There are 3 free passes for Seniors for the Lecture Series by OSHA at the
Godnick
Center
each Friday. The current topic is World War II and the time is 1:30 – 3:00.
